Take Action: Week of Arpil 17, 2017

After a hard week at the Arizona Legislature, your voice is still needed to keep the pressure on.

It’s been ugly. Yes, HB2022, allowing the use of snake and rat shot in cities, was defeated this past week – and thanks to all of you who used RTS or made phone calls in opposition! But the week marked the passage of more anti-citizen initiative legislation, too.

With more vouchers, more CAP bills, and the assault on voter rights, it is clear that this is NOT an election year. Republicans think we’ll forget what happened in 2017 if they shift their priorities back to public education next session, but we’ll remember. #Vote2018

So what should we expect from the coming budget? The governor is pushing a performance-based budget that favors charter schools over traditional public schools. Democrats support a 4% teacher salary increase now and offer a plan to pay for it that includes freezing corporate tax cuts for private schools and stopping new tax credits.

• Call Gov. Ducey, Sen. Brophy McGee and Rep. Syms to go on record with your budget priorities – increasing funding now for public education in Arizona to ensure districts have the ability to significantly increase teacher pay.

Gov. Ducey: (602) 542-4331
Rep. Syms: (602) 926-4860
Sen. Brophy McGee: (602) 926-4486.

• Also, SCM1009 (urging delisting of gray wolf) is scheduled for COW (Committee of the Whole) today, Monday, April 17, on the House floor. Call Rep. Syms, (602) 926-4860 and ask her to oppose.

AG Jeff Sessions spread the administration’s fear-mongering on the immigration issue in Arizona last Tuesday, declaring the border a “ground zero” of death and violence to justify the administration’s apparent war on the undocumented, most of whom are good, hardworking, law-abiding members of our communities. The issues are overwhelming, but whatever you put at the top of your list, it is important to keep the pressure on our U.S. Senators as they are charged with providing the checks and balances so necessary today. Whether it’s “No Wall, No Ban,” “Investigate the Russia Connection,” “Healthcare is a Human Right,” or Stand with Planned Parenthood,” we are all invited to Stand for Sane Government, from noon-1 pm on Mondays, outside Sen. McCain’s office, and on Fridays, outside Sen. Flake’s office:

• Come if you can! #McCainMonday at 12 noon on the SE corner of 22nd St. and Camelback and/or #FlakeFriday on the NE corner at the same intersection. Bring signs, flags and letters to leave at their offices.

• And keep calling! Identify yourself as a constituent and ask Senators Flake and McCain to meet in person with constituents in Phoenix, or speak about any other single issue.

Sen. John McCain: (202) 224-2235 or (602) 952-2410
Sen. Jeff Flake: (202) 224-4521 or (602) 840-1891
